They both may provide customers with lawn services; however, lawn care companies usually take care of weed control, mowing and trimming, leaf collection and the like and landscaping companies will do additional things such as building patios and designing curb appeal.

Knowing which type of service you need for your property can be confusing, especially when this particular industry is referred to as several different things – a lawn care service, landscaping companies, lawn and garden care services, etc. Even though a company may be categorized as one or list many types of lawn services, you may have to call to determine if they are a lawn care service or have actual landscaping experience.

The significant difference is mowing and hardscaping. So let’s take a look at what those two terms mean.

Landscaping companies do sometimes take care of basic planting and seeding, but usually, these services are performed in conjunction with their primary service of design and installation, sodding and other turf care, and hardscaping. Hardscaping refers to the construction of outdoor living spaces, patios, fire-pits, walkways, decks, installing irrigation systems and outdoor lighting. 

A lawn care service is primarily a combination of basic lawn care such as fertilization, aeration, and seeding, along with the routine maintenance of the lawn (i.e. mowing, trimming.) This service also takes care of weed control and pest control and may include trimming shrubs, mulching, pruning trees, soil pH correction and otherwise maintaining the lawn once it has been designed and created by the landscaping company.

Now, do you see why it’s confusing? Because it is not unheard of for companies to call themselves landscaping companies and include some or all of the services of a lawn care company, and vice versa – to some extent. Your task is to determine if their experience in the services they offer matches your lawn’s needs.
